My First Erg - 1972
Bill Etsweiler
When I finally did muster the courage to tell Coach Ullrich that I wanted to be a teacher, he said, “I could tell that you have struggled with this decision. Let me know if you ever need a reference…and it’s wonderful that you’re still going to be in a service!”
Since ‘retiring’ as a Youngster, I have learned that you can take a midshipman out of the Academy, but you can’t take the Academy out of this midshipman. I have circled back to remain a solid supporter of USNA and a big Navy Crew fan. Meanwhile, since retiring from over thirty years as a teacher, football academic coach, and school principal (along with a few years in as an engineer), I have enjoyed mountain climbing, bicycle racing, and of course, rowing!
In the past I have joined Class of 1975 classmates in facilitating USNA Capstone Seminars, and currently I volunteer with the Middle States Association to assist on high school evaluation teams.
I am grateful and excited for this opportunity to join the GOATS Row to support the Emily Whitehead Foundation and the Annapolis Rowing Club.
